Summary
Pregnancy is a physiological process between fertilization and
birth, which involves changes that take place in line with the needs
of the developing fetus. The use of medicines may be due to preexisting
pregnancy or diseases that occur during pregnancy. Thyroid
dysfunctions are also included in these diseases. Thyroid dysfunction
is seen in approximately 2-3% of pregnancies. If it is not treated, it
can cause serious risks to both mother and baby. Although the drugs
used in the treatment of these disorders are generally safe, some of
derivatives can cause side effects for mother such aagranulocytosis,
thrombocytopenia, tachycardia, nephrotic syndrome. Again
depending on the use of medicines; teratogenic effects such as fetal
hyperthyroidism / hypothyroidism, neonatal head development
disorders can be observed by antibody or drug transfer from placenta
to baby. As in each drug group, thyroid drugs must be used only after
the benefit / benefit ratio is well assessed. In this review, teratogenic
potentials of drugs used in thyroid function disorders during
pregnancy are evaluated.
