Summary:
Ecballium elaterium (Cucurbitaceae) is a wide-spread plant
in Mediterranean countries. In Turkey, the fruit juice
is reported to be used for the treatment of sinusitis
and cucurbitacin B was isolated as the anti-inflammatory
active ingredient. In this paper, the chemical constituents
of E. elaterium (cucurbitacins, sterols, phenolic compounds,
amino acids, fatty acid and other compounds) have been
reviewed.
